MRC Certified Internship Program

MRC Certified is a program to train high school Junior and Senior members of the Charlottesville community in the skills necessary for some of the technical jobs in the music industry. We currently offer training and internships in Live Sound and in Studio Production. If you’re a high school upper-classman (or home-school equivalent) interested in learning more about either of these fields, please read below and/or contact Jordan (jordan@musicresourcecenter.org) about signing up! Program participants are paid for their internship work at a competitive wage above the state minimum, and lesson times are set to accommodate the participant’s schedule and availability (meaning we can probably work around your soccer practice or your other job)

Studio Certified

Program participants will work with mentor Orion Faruque to master basic studio etiquette, procedures and techniques. At the end of the program, the attendee will be able to run an unassisted session in the MRC studio and be prepared to intern in a commercial studio. Excelling students will be prepared to become assistant engineers. Over the course of the program, the student will complete 32 hours of one-on-one lessons with the instructor and be provided 10-20 hours of paid internship work. Internship work will predominantly take place at the Music Resource Center

Live Sound

Program participants will work with mentor Nate Scholz to master basic live audio etiquette, procedures and techniques. At the end of the program, the attendee will be able to run an unassisted show in the MRC live space, and will be capable of assisting on live events in the community. Excelling students will be prepared to become capable live audio engineers, or will be comfortable running sound for their own music projects in a live capacity. Over the course of the program, the student will complete 28 hours of one-on-one lessons with the instructor and be provided 10-20 hours of paid internship work. Internship work will predominantly take place at local music venues.

Cost

Sounds pretty great, right? So it must be crazy expensive? Nope! This program is free for members of the Music Resource Center. Really and truly (in fact, participants get paid for their internship hours, so it’s even better than free). If you’re eligible for the program, you’re eligible to be an MRC Member, and those fees are determined by a sliding scale based on your family’s income. The highest fee is $200 per year, and the lowest is $1 per year, and most people fall somewhere in between. Hop over to the membership page for more information, or ask Jordan when you contact him about the program!

Not a High School Junior or Senior?

If you’re not eligible YET (meaning you’re a Sophomore or younger), please reach out to Jordan anyway! We probably won’t be able to make an exception for you, but we might be able to get you on the wait list, or help you find ways to get a head start for when you hit your Junior year.

If high school is behind you, but you really want to learn Studio Production, please reach out to Orion (orion@musicresourcecenter.org) for information about his studio training for adults
