First Amendment Writes

First Amendment Writes is an annual poetry and songwriting contest designed to celebrate the creative heights that can only be achieved when artists are free to express themselves on any theme, subject or idea. Ten finalists in both poetry and songwriting are selected to perform their works at a live event before a panel of outstanding judges. Past judges have included Dave Matthews Band member Boyd Tinsley, internationally recognized poet Rita Dove, best-selling writer Rita Mae Brown, musician and winner of YouTube’s ”My Grammy Moment” Ann Marie Calhoun, and music industry executives Bruce Flohr, David Frey and Jason Colton. A $500 prize is awarded to one person in each category.
Party Like a Rockstar: 2011

It’s that time of year again. What time, you ask? Time to Party Like a Rockstar, for a great cause! On Friday, October 21st our annual Fall Fundraiser will take place at the LeRoi Moore Performance Hall at MRC. Doors will open at 8:00 PM and you’ll be dancing till 1:00 PM. In addition to catering by C&O Restaurant there will be an open bar (VIP ticket holders will get top shelf liquors) and music provided by Four (MRC Members and 2011 Battle of the Bands Champions) and the one and only XPS. There will be a raffle and silent auction with great items like a Fender Telecaster autographed by Brad Paisley!

Four at Fridays After Five!
Posted by: | CommentsOur 2011 Battle of the Bands winners, Four, will be playing Fridays After Five this coming Friday, July 22nd. They received this gig as a result of winning first place during our first annual May Music Madness event.
Four will go onstage at 5:30 and will be followed by headliners The Nighthawks.

MRC Video makes LA Film Festival
Posted by: | CommentsThe youth music video project Downlow, a project that evolved from a collaborative effort between Light House Studio and the Music Resource Center, has been accepted into the Los Angeles Film Festival, one of the most prestigious American Film Festivals that annually draws more than 90,000 attendees. Downlow features the music of singer/songwriter Arliss Adou and the videography of filmmaker Sam Gorman. The film was accepted in the “High School Shorts” section of the Future Filmmakers Showcase.
“It’s amazing to have two organizations collaborate every year and have this kind of result, where the end-product is recognized by one of the biggest forums for filmmaking,” said Lighthouse Executive Director Deanna Gould. The Los Angeles Film Festival is the premier showcase for the best American and international independent cinema production and is sponsored by The Los Angeles Times. MRC 2011 SummerProgramming Flyer
Pro Audio and Recording Techniques: June 13-17, 2pm-330pm
This workshop will focus on audio engineering and recording and mixing techniques. Participants will learn the inner workings of a professional studio as well as how to build and customize a home studio for their own recording enjoyment.
Drums! Drums! Drums!: June 20-24, 230pm-4pm
This workshop will focus on everything drums. Participants of all skill levels will learn various drum techniques as well as drum kit maintenance skills. Be prepared to play hard and play a lot!
The Beat Club: June 27-July 1, 2pm-330pm
For students interested in producing hip-hop, r&b and pop music, this group is for you! Participants will learn how to produce beats and instrumentals using cutting-edge digital music software Reason 4.0. This course will include sampling, drum programming, synthesizers and sequencing.
Girls Luv Guitars: June 20-24, 4pm-530pm
This workshop will focus on young ladies interested in playing acoustic guitar. Participants of all skill levels will work with a female instructor in order to learn various guitar chords and song structure. This course is perfect for any young lady looking to start a new hobby or enhance her own skills. The MRC will provide guitars.
This Week In Music: July 11-15, 4pm-530pm
This workshop is a discussion group focused on issues, rumors, news and happening in the music industry. Students will discuss current events in the music industry and learn the history and cycles that helped influence and contribute to present day music and music trends. Participants and encouraged to come with open minds and their own topics of interest.
Dance With A Star July: 18-22, 4pm-530pm
If hip-hop dance is your thing then look no further. Spend a few hours learning contemporary dance routines with our in-house instructor. Work up a sweat and learn how to dance like the best of them. This workshop is open to dancers of all skill levels. Just bring your body and some comfortable shoes and we will do the rest!
